HyPat - Global hydrogen potential atlas for the sustainable hydrogen economy of tomorrow

In the HyPat project, Fraunhofer IEG is working with its project partners to develop a global hydrogen atlas. This will provide a comprehensive overview of future production and import countries, taking into account their techno-economic, social and economic characteristics. In this way, the project will answer the question of how Germany can continue to meet its energy needs in the future through imports of green hydrogen and hydrogen synthesis products. The project thus makes a significant contribution to the objectives of the German National Hydrogen Strategy (NWS) and is in line with the international agreements on climate protection, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and the current hydrogen strategy of the EU.

In this project, the Fraunhofer IEG focuses on the techno-economic assessment of the production and transport of green hydrogen in selected countries and on the analysis of the potential domestic demand of these countries. The aim is to develop a global supply and demand forecast up to 2050 and thus make a significant contribution to assessing the supply costs of future imported hydrogen for Germany and Europe.

To this end, Fraunhofer IEG is applying experience, knowledge and networks from previous and ongoing projects on existing gas infrastructures, the development of hydrogen infrastructures, transport options, hydrogen production and use and synthesis products.
